7 Things Houston Homeowners Forget to Clean (But Really Shouldn't)

The Spots That Sneak Up on You

Most Houston homeowners keep up with the obvious stuff — counters, sinks, floors. But certain areas get bypassed so consistently that by the time anyone notices them, they've become a real project. Here are the seven most commonly neglected spots in Houston homes, and what to do about each one.

1. Ceiling Fan Blades

Ceiling fans run nearly year-round in Houston. The constant spinning doesn't prevent dust from building up — it compresses it into a thick layer on top of each blade. When the fan direction switches seasonally, that layer shakes loose and drops onto everything below.

Fix it: Wipe each blade with a damp microfiber cloth or use the pillowcase trick — slide an old pillowcase over each blade, trap the dust inside, and toss it in the wash.

2. Refrigerator Coils

Dust-clogged coils make your fridge work harder, use more energy, and wear out faster. In Houston's humidity, lint and dust mat together quickly around condenser coils.

Fix it: Pull the fridge out from the wall. Use a coil brush or vacuum attachment to remove buildup from coils at the back or bottom. Do this every 6 months.

3. Window Tracks

Houston's humidity turns window tracks into mildew highways. The narrow channels trap moisture, dead bugs, dirt, and eventually black mildew that won't come out with a single swipe.

Fix it: Use a stiff brush and a baking soda-and-white-vinegar paste. Let it sit for 10 minutes, then scrub and vacuum out the loosened gunk. A chopstick wrapped in a damp cloth works for tight corners.

4. Shower Curtain Liner

The plastic liner takes the direct hit from every shower — soap scum, mildew, and hard water deposits accumulate on the bottom and lower third. Most people replace it when they should clean it.

Fix it: Throw it in the washing machine with a cup of white vinegar and a few old towels on a gentle cycle. Air dry. Or wipe the surface weekly with a squeegee after each shower to prevent buildup.

5. Under Kitchen Appliances

The space under the refrigerator, stove, and dishwasher collects grease, crumbs, and — in Houston — the occasional pest. It's also a prime spot for humidity trapping against the floor.

Fix it: Pull out appliances quarterly. Sweep and mop thoroughly. Check for signs of moisture damage along the floor where appliances meet the wall.

6. HVAC Return Vents

Houston HVAC systems run almost constantly. Return air vents pull air (and everything in it) through constantly — dust, pet hair, pollen, and in older homes, mold spores. A clogged vent reduces air quality and strains your system.

Fix it: Remove vent covers and wash with warm soapy water. Replace filters on schedule — every 30–60 days in Houston is the right cadence, not the 90-day default many people follow.

7. Baseboards

Baseboards sit right at floor level, where dust, pet hair, and tracked-in dirt settle. In a city with as much humidity and pollen as Houston, baseboards accumulate a visible gray film within weeks.

Fix it: Wipe down with a damp microfiber cloth during each cleaning. For deeper buildup, use a Magic Eraser. Dryer sheets rubbed along clean baseboards leave a light anti-static coating that repels dust longer.

The Easier Solution

If keeping up with these spots feels like one more thing on an already packed list, a CleanTex recurring clean covers all of them as part of our standard checklist. We built the list around Houston homes specifically — which means these often-missed spots aren't an afterthought.
